SUMMARY:Non-Toxic Masculinity in Fiction
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nIt’d be an understatement to say that mass media is riddled with harmful depictions of masculinity. To help turn the tide of damaging morals and inappropriate role models\, we must not only understand the patterns of toxicity that are presented at large\, but how we can better portray masculine-identified characters. It’s possible to create male characters that are neither damaging nor lifeless. \nIn this 3-hour class\, we’ll engage in writing exercises and discussions to help us better pinpoint toxic versus non-toxic portrayals of masculinity—including sex\, consent\, violence\, and humor—and look at non-toxic examples in both written and visual media from such fiction writers (and directors) as Benjamin Alire Sáenz\, Kacen Callender\, Barry Jenkins\, Akwaeke Emezi\, Janet Mock\, Our Lady J\, Daniel Kwan\, and more. With this approach\, we’ll learn how to create engaging\, complex\, and even messy male characters that are simultaneously helpful to society and the masculine identity. \n*This class is open to all identities. \n$75.00 GrubStreet Members | $85.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/non-toxic-masculinity-in-fiction/

SUMMARY:Novel Writing Workshop for Queer\, Trans\, and/or Nonbinary Writers
DESCRIPTION:8 Mondays from 6:00pm-9:00pm ET\, starting July 10th\, 2023 via Zoom \n\n\nThis class is for queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary novelists who have taken advanced workshops before\, are well versed in matters of craft\, and who have already made some progress on a first draft. Many queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary writers may have experienced workshops in the past that were silencing\, unhelpful\, or damaging when being workshopped by a predominantly cisgender/heterosexual writing group\, however well-intentioned the group may have been. This particular workshop course is designed to help create a more intimate and relatable space for queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary writers to give and receive feedback on their works in progress\, while also generating new material. \nThe goals of this course are to workshop at least 15 pages in eight weeks—minimum\, depending on class size—as well as to identify and brainstorm any shortcomings in craft areas such as characterization\, point of view\, structure\, plot\, and scenes. Each class will include workshopping two students\, with the final hour dedicated to accountability and generating new material. Feedback will be delivered using the novel-in-progress method: reading your pages (up to 15 pages\, double-spaced\, 12pt font) aloud in class at least once in the course—again minimum\, dependent on class size—and receiving on-the-spot\, non-silencing feedback from your fellow novelists and instructor. \n*This class is intended for writers who identify as queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary only. While novels that deal with queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary themes are certainly welcome\, they’re not required for this class. \n*Previous students of this course are welcome to return and continue workshopping their pages. \n\n\n$510.00 GrubStreet Members | $530.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/novel-writing-workshop-for-queer-trans-andor-nonbinary-writers-1/

SUMMARY:History Reclaimed: Facts and Fictions
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nThe people who lived before us have made each of us who we are today. There can be a great pull to portray these lives and moments of history in fictional narrative. But what if an historical fact wrecks the plot we’ve concocted? What do we do if one’s lived experience messes with the purposes and points we want our story to make? How do we portray the history of marginalized communities when so much of it has been forsaken\, co-opted\, or destroyed? Using examples from Lin-Manuel Miranda\, Jordy Rosenberg\, Doug Wright\, Rebecca Makkai\, and more\, we’ll look at how to honor facts\, forsake facts\, and even turn history completely on its head—all while respecting the people who lived these lives. Students will walk away with a stronger knowledge of mindful research and plotting\, pitfalls to avoid\, and how to turn barriers of accuracy into deeply impactful moments. \nWe’ll look at the fictionalized representations of such people and events as Eliza Hamilton\, Phillip DeVine\, Brandon Teena\, Dr. Alan L. Hart\, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf\, “Honest Jack” Sheppard\, Mark Read(e)\, the Underground Railroad\, the AIDS epidemic\, and the Stonewall Uprising. \n*This class is open to all identities. \n$75.00 GrubStreet Members | $85.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/history-reclaimed-facts-and-fictions/

SUMMARY:Writing Outside of Your Lane
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nOver the past several years\, the publishing world (and its readers) have thankfully demanded more diversity within stories. But as welcoming as this change is\, it can leave many non-marginalized writers with anxiety. How are you supposed to go about it? What if you mess up? Are you allowed to write about marginalized people at all? This 3-hour course provides mainstream writers with the basics of how to write a marginalized character with which they don’t have a lived experience\, breaking the process down into the bare bones of Self-Reflection\, Research\, Craft\, Editing\, and How to Handle Backlash. With pragmatic and clear-cut information—as well as the wisdom from such writers as Alexander Chee\, Peter Ho Davies\, and Stella Young—writers will leave this course with significantly more insight\, awareness\, and confidence to produce the most accurate and empathetic work they can. \n*This class is open to all identities. \n$75.00 GrubStreet Members | $85.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/writing-outside-of-your-lane-3/

SUMMARY:Writing Messy Queer Characters
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nDisney villains\, disaster lesbians\, and hot trans messes\, oh my! In this 3-hour class\, we’ll look at “good” messy queers\, “bad” messy queers\, stereotypes\, redemption\, interiority\, and mainstream media representations. Along with a lecture segment\, we’ll also take time to discuss some common anxieties when writing a complex queer character\, brainstorm craft elements for your story\, and engage in a writing exercise. \n*While this class is designed with queer writers in mind\, cisgender/heterosexual writers are welcome to attend and learn. However\, please know we won’t be discussing introductory levels of queer representation or community\, nor the do’s and don’ts of writing outside of one’s lane. \n$75.00 GrubStreet Members | $85.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/writing-messy-queer-characters-2/

SUMMARY:Queer Writing Essentials
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nWriting authentic work as a marginalized voice can come with some unique problems\, especially if/when we engage with the mainstream publishing industry or its readers. This 3-hour class is designed to help queer writers navigate some of the less-discussed aspects of marginalized writing\, including how to introduce your characters as queer\, creating effective social justice themes within your storytelling\, handling “relatability\,” how to invite in outside readers without compromising your story’s authenticity\, and navigating scenes of sex and/or physical intimacy. Peppered with writing exercises\, this lecture-style class will engage with works from such authors as Gabby Rivera\, Andrea Lawlor\, Rajiv Mohabir\, Kacen Callender\, Akwaeke Emezi\, Carmen Maria Machado\, Jordy Rosenberg\, Casey McQuiston\, and more. \n*While this class is designed with queer writers in mind\, cisgender/heterosexual writers are welcome to attend and learn. SUMMARY:Queery-ing: Navigating Agents and Publishers While Queer
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nWhat does a “very nice deal” mean in a publishing contract announcement? What’s a pre-empt? How does the trajectory from query to book deal normally work? Navigating the publishing industry is confusing at the best of times\, but when you’re also a marginalized writer\, it can feel overwhelming. In this 3-hour crash course\, we’ll spend the first half in lecture and information—including query letters\, industry language\, standard agent contract rates\, the differences of publishing houses\, and more—and the second half in a mix of Q&A and beginning to build our query letters\, all while centering queer writers and the particular challenges they may face. \n*This class is intended only for LGBTQ+ writers. \n$75.00 GrubStreet Members | $85.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/queery-ing-navigating-agents-and-publishers-while-queer/

SUMMARY:Effective Social Justice Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:1-hour class via Zoom \nSocial justice themes in fiction feel needed now more than ever. Throughout history\, the written word has been effective in changing minds and soothing hearts. But as much as you want to tackle these issues\, you might feel lost or overwhelmed with possibility. Where do you start? How do you keep your character from looking like they’re defined by their oppression? How can you satisfy your reader if your story isn’t or can’t be wrapped up in a neat little package? How do you portray an antagonistic force that is neither flat nor forgivable? \nIn this 1-hour class\, we’ll look at some steps to help you find the social justice focus in your work\, how to portray it on the page\, and how to make it part of your character’s lives in effective ways for your reader. \n*Cisgender/heterosexual people are welcome to attend this class if they’re eager to learn about social justice storytelling. \nSliding scale: $25/$50/$75/$100 ($75+$25 scholarship donation)\nRegister here: https://www.milotodd.com/effective-social-justice-storytelling/

SUMMARY:Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusion in the Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:90-minute class via Zoom \nPlease note: This session is open to GrubStreet instructors only. \nWith transgender and nonbinary visibility on the rise\, transgender and nonbinary stories are appearing in fiction at a significant rate\, necessitating workshops to grow awareness of how to best critique such stories and ensure transgender and nonbinary students feel included in the classroom at large. By providing a helpful environment for transgender and nonbinary writers and their stories\, instructors can play an important role in bolstering transgender and nonbinary visibility in the written arts. \nIn this 90-minute session\, we’ll look at how to prep your syllabus and classroom for transgender and nonbinary inclusion; investigate classroom situations most commonly experienced by transgender and nonbinary students within a cis*-majority space; and have opportunity to ask curiosity questions you may have about the transgender and nonbinary communities. Don’t be shy! This session is designed to encourage cisgender* instructors to do their best and help them better connect with themselves and the gender-diverse worlds around them. \n* “Cisgender” (or “cis” for short) is defined as a person who identifies with the gender and/or sex they were assigned at birth. \nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/transgender-and-nonbinary-inclusion-in-the-writing-workshop/

SUMMARY:Inviting In Outside Readers (Without Selling Out)
DESCRIPTION:1-hour class via Zoom \nAs marginalized writers of authentic fiction\, it can be difficult to get our work traditionally published. Catching the eye of a mainstream publisher often means convincing them that our work will be interesting to a mainstream audience\, whether we’re writing for them or not. Our stories are important\, however\, and deserve to be told and seen. \nWhile much can be said about traditional publishing as a marginalized writer\, a good starting point is a reader’s feelings of connection to a character\, regardless of the identities and/or lived experiences of either. For those of us who want to be traditionally published\, how do we invite outside readers into our stories without catering to them? How do we stay authentic while facing the so-called problem of “relatability”? In this 1-hour class\, we’ll look at some tips\, methods\, and examples for opening the door for outside readers while still staying true to our stories. \n*Cisgender/heterosexual people are welcome to attend this class if they’re curious to learn about this topic. \nSliding scale: $25/$50/$75/$100 ($75+$25 scholarship donation)\nRegister here: https://www.milotodd.com/inviting-in-outside-readers/

SUMMARY:Jumpstart Your Novel
DESCRIPTION:6 Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting October 13th\, 2022 via Zoom \nYou’ve started out on a first novel draft—maybe you just have an idea\, maybe you’ve written a few chapters\, maybe you’ve written a lot—but you’re not sure where to go next. No matter where you are in the drafting process\, this class can help! Each week\, we will focus on one area of novel-specific craft –– such as character development\, scene building\, conflict\, and narrative arc –– and generate new material through a series of prompts and exercises. SUMMARY:Writing Outside of Your Lane Series: The Basics
\n$65.00 GrubStreet Members | $75.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/writing-outside-of-your-lane-1/

SUMMARY:Novel in Progress
DESCRIPTION:8 Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting April 7th\, 2022 via Zoom \nFirst drafts of novels can be messy\, amorphous\, and daunting. SUMMARY:Novel Writing Workshop for Queer\, Trans\, and/or Nonbinary Writers
DESCRIPTION:10 Mondays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting January 24th\, 2022 via Zoom \nThis class is for queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary novelists who have taken advanced workshops before\, are well versed in matters of craft\, and who have already made some progress on a first draft. Many queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary writers may have experienced workshops in the past that were silencing\, unhelpful\, or damaging when being workshopped by a predominantly cisgender/heterosexual writing group\, however well-intentioned the group may have been. This particular workshop course is designed to help create a more intimate and relatable space for queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary writers to both give and receive feedback on their works in progress. While the course will be predominantly workshop-focused\, we’ll also go over some craft elements\, as well as challenges more common to marginalized writers\, such as believability\, relatability\, and character (im)purity. \nThe goals of this workshop are to workshop at least 15 pages in ten weeks—minimum\, depending on class size—as well as to identify and correct any shortcomings in craft areas such as characterization\, point of view\, structure\, plot\, and scenes. Each class will begin with a brief\, novel-specific writing exercise or lesson; the rest of the class will be devoted to workshopping. \nPlease Note: Class does not meet on February 21st. \n$610.00 GrubStreet Members | $635.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/novel-writing-workshop-for-queer-trans-andor-nonbinary-writers/

With pragmatic and clear-cut information—as well as the wisdom from such writers as Alexander Chee\, Peter Ho Davies\, and Stella Young—writers will leave this course with significantly more insight\, awareness\, and confidence to produce the most accurate and empathetic work they can. \n$65.00 GrubStreet Members | $75.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/writing-outside-of-your-lane-series-the-basics-remote-1/

In this 3-hour class\, we’ll look at “good” messy queers\, “bad” messy queers\, stereotypes\, redemption\, interiority\, and mainstream media representations.
