SUMMARY:TLP @ An Unlikely Story
DESCRIPTION:In-person event in conversation with TBD \n\n\n\nWe’re thrilled to welcome author Milo Todd to discuss his debut novel\, The Lilac People. A moving and deeply humane story\, The Lilac People tells the story of a trans man who must relinquish the freedoms of prewar Berlin to survive first the Nazis and then the Allies\, all while protecting the ones he loves\, for readers of All the Light We Cannot See and In Memoriam. \n\n\n\nFrom Maddie Recommends: \n\n\n\nTodd’s debut is the World War II-era\, trans-driven historical fiction that I’ve been waiting for. Erasure is rampant in trans history\, but through the stories of Bertie\, Gert\, and Sophie\, Todd’s novel allows us to remember and honor the queer and trans heroes who blazed the trail to progress. His vivid depiction of Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld at the Institute of Sexual Science and the horrifying treatment trans people endured following the war reminds us of the greatness and grief in the history of trans people\, and what is at stake for this still marginalized group today. The Lilac People is a critical addition to the World War II historical fiction canon and an act of revolution in its own right. \n\n\n\nFrom Bill Recommends: \n\n\n\nTHE LILAC PEOPLE by Milo Todd is a heart-wrenching novel that details the plight of trans men before\, during\, and after The Holocaust. Following two timelines\, we experience the wonders of pre-war Berlin\, and we learn all about the Hirschfield Institute of Sexual Science while also holding our breath as Bertie and his wife take on the identities of an elderly couple. They soon realize they can’t hide\, because the Americans\, when freeing everyone from the concentration camps\, jailed anyone with a pink or black star. These poor people went from one Hell to another. Can they escape to the United States? It’s a powerful story well told\, and this could be a great book club choice. \n\n\n\nPlease note that photography/video recording during this event is prohibited. Milo will discuss his novel\, answer questions\, and sign books. Tickets are required for this event.

SUMMARY:Writing Outside of Your Lane
DESCRIPTION:90-minute class via Zoom \nAs the call for diversity in stories grows stronger (thankfully)\, many writers without lived experience of marginalization may feel anxiety about how to approach these stories with care and authenticity. Questions like “How do I start?”\, “What if I make mistakes?”\, and “Am I even allowed to write this?” are common—and valid. \nIn this 90-minute lecture\, Milo Todd offers mainstream writers a thoughtful\, practical framework for writing characters outside your own lived experience. Through the pillars of Self-Reflection\, Research\, Craft\, and Editing\, you’ll gain tools to approach this process with care\, empathy\, and a deeper understanding of your responsibility as a writer. \nThis class welcomes writers of all identities and focuses on equipping you with the knowledge and confidence to write with integrity. Let’s work together to create stories that reflect the rich\, diverse world we live in. \nRegister here: https://secure.clarionwest.org/event.jsp?event=2066&

SUMMARY:*FREE!* Why Bother?: Making Art During Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:1-hour class via Zoom \nBetween elections\, pandemics\, police brutality\, climate change\, and a host of other difficult situations\, I’ve received the question more and more: Why bother? What’s the point of being artistic during troubled times? \nThis session is free and open to everyone with this question on their minds. Budgeted for an hour\, this talk will look at science-backed studies\, logic-based stances\, and provide time at the end to answer questions. (Group discussion may be available depending on the number of attendees.) \nRegistration is required\, with opportunity to submit questions for consideration and tips to share with your fellow artists. Please note that no recordings\, photographs\, or screenshots are allowed during this session. Attendees will receive a Zoom link via email ~15 minutes before the session begins. \nRegister here: https://forms.gle/rgKh8toH7dmEm4rX6

SUMMARY:*FREE!* Event Safety for Queer Authors
DESCRIPTION:1-hour class via Zoom \nWith the ongoing attempts to suppress\, silence\, and intimidate queer authors and their work\, many writers have become concerned about their safety when presenting at events. Whether it’s in-person or virtual\, a panel or a lecture\, a bookstore or a university\, there’s plenty you can do to keep yourself safe while still promoting your art. \nThis talk will provide tips for bolstering your safety during events\, as well as engaging in questions to help you weigh potential pros and cons of participating in a given event. This session is free and open to everyone with this concern on their minds. Unpublished writers\, cishet writers\, librarians\, booksellers\, and event coordinators are welcome to attend. It’s never too early (or too late) to learn! \nRegistration is required. Please note that no recordings\, photographs\, or screenshots are allowed during this session. Attendees will receive a Zoom link via email ~15 minutes before the session begins. \nRegister here: https://forms.gle/fnuXjJex24PxJsHq5

\nRegister here: https://forms.gle/VxaFXvyFtsYYVkm38

SUMMARY:*FREE!* Transcestors Series: Ancient Burial Sites
DESCRIPTION:1-hour class via Zoom \nFor as long as archaeologists have existed\, they’ve been determining sex and gender from remains found in old burial sites. They catalog these findings to help paint a picture of people\, identities\, cultures\, and societies of the past. But where do trans\, nonbinary\, and intersex people fall within these categorizations? How accurate are the scientific efforts to determine assigned sex? Is it possible to further determine one’s gender identity based on such conclusions? And how have all of these cataloging attempts affected modern people’s views of trans history? This session will look at exhumed ancient burial sites\, from Peru to Italy to Finland to Bohemia\, and discuss just how far back trans history goes. This session includes images of ancient burial remains (i.e. bones and fragments) and mentions of ancient rituals (e.g. human sacrifices). \nTranscestors is a series of free 1-hour sessions focused on trans and queer (but mostly trans) history based on Milo Todd’s research for his historical fiction. Those interested must have any subscription tier of The Queer Writer\, paid or free\, and must use their subscriber email to register for sessions. For safety reasons\, sessions will NOT be recorded. A Zoom link will be sent to registered attendees ~15 minutes before a session starts. \n*Sessions are open to all identities\, but please know Transcestors centers trans and/or nonbinary attendees. \nFree for all The Queer Writer subscribers\nRegister here: https://www.thequeerwriter.milotodd.com/transcestors/

SUMMARY:Queery-ing: Navigating Agents and Publishers While Queer
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nWhat does a “very nice deal” mean in a publishing contract announcement? What’s a pre-empt? How does the trajectory from query to book deal normally work? Navigating the publishing industry is confusing at the best of times\, but when you’re also a marginalized writer\, it can feel overwhelming. In this 3-hour crash course\, we’ll spend the first half in lecture and information—including query letters\, industry language\, standard agent contract rates\, the differences of publishing houses\, and more—and the second half in a mix of Q&A and beginning to build our query letters\, all while centering queer writers and the particular challenges they may face. \n*This class is intended only for LGBTQ+ writers. \n$75.00 GrubStreet Members | $85.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/seminar/queery-ing-navigating-agents-and-publishers-while-queer

SUMMARY:Novel in Progress
DESCRIPTION:8 Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm ET\, starting July 11th\, 2024 via Zoom \n\n\nFirst drafts of novels can be messy\, amorphous\, and daunting. Sometimes\, extensive critical feedback can be counterproductive before the first draft is finished\, yet writers often find themselves losing focus without support and guidance. In class\, we will do exercises\, discuss craft issues—characterization\, the protagonist’s desire\, plot and outlining\, endings—and read short scenes from each other’s work\, providing feedback in an environment that recognizes the specific challenges of the novel in progress. Novels of all genres are welcome. Please bring the first page (double-spaced\, 12-point font\, 1” margins) of your novel to the first class. \n*This class is open to all identities. \n\n\n$520.00 GrubStreet Members | $540.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/workshop/novel-in-progress-su24-02

SUMMARY:A Brief History of the Stonewall Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:1-hour event via Zoom \nWe all know that June is Pride Month\, but do we know why? Come join historical fiction author Milo Todd as he discusses the Stonewall Rebellion\, a grassroots movement that sparked LGBTQ+ rights across the country\, and later\, across the world. What happened during the multi-night rebellion around the Stonewall Inn in June of 1969 in Greenwich Village\, New York? What was the first thing thrown and who threw it? Who took part and who stayed away? Hear the details of what happened when (predominantly) impoverished\, BIPOC gender nonconforming people decided they’d had enough of police brutality\, and how this ultimately led to the creation of Pride Month. There will be an opportunity for Q&A at the end of the talk. Note: This session includes mentions of queer/transphobia\, racism\, police brutality\, slurs\, murder\, sexual assault\, and misgendering/deadnaming. \nRegister here: https://www.sturbridgelibrary.org/

SUMMARY:Writing Outside of Your Lane
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nOver the past several years\, the publishing world (and its readers) have thankfully demanded more diversity within stories. But as welcoming as this change is\, it can leave many non-marginalized writers with anxiety. How are you supposed to go about it? What if you mess up? Are you allowed to write about marginalized people at all? This 3-hour course provides mainstream writers with the basics of how to write a marginalized character with which they don’t have a lived experience\, breaking the process down into the bare bones of Self-Reflection\, Research\, Craft\, Editing\, and How to Handle Backlash. With pragmatic and clear-cut information—as well as the wisdom from such writers as Alexander Chee\, Peter Ho Davies\, and Stella Young—writers will leave this course with significantly more insight\, awareness\, and confidence to produce the most accurate and empathetic work they can. \n*This class is open to all identities. \n$75.00 GrubStreet Members | $85.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/seminar/writing-outside-of-your-lane-undefined

SUMMARY:Genre-Queer: Narrative Structures for the Other
DESCRIPTION:6 Mondays from 7:00pm-9:00pm ET (6:00pm-8:00pm CT)\, starting June 17th\, 2024 via Zoom \n\nThroughout our history of marginalization and oppression\, queer voices have created our own ways of speaking and expressing ourselves. But with us so Othered in queer tongues\, how do we tell our stories to the mainstream authentically? In this queer-focused course\, we’ll look at several literary tactics for expressing ourselves—such as Fracturing\, Modulating\, Fabulism\, and Spiraling—as well as finding our voices as queer people and tackling such conundrums as slang and cultural references. We’ll look at examples of such writers as Carmen Maria Machado\, Jordy Rosenberg\, Akwaeke Emezi\, and more to help us assert our stories in ways that demand us to be heard without compromising our queerness. This course includes weekly opportunities to have short stories of given experimental narratives verbally workshopped. \n*Cisgender/heterosexual people are welcome to attend this course if they’re eager to learn about storytelling methods beyond the traditional narrative arc. \n\n$222.00 Regular | $199.80 Friend\nFunds are available for individuals on public assistance.\nRegister here: https://loft.org/classes/genre-queer-narrative-structures-other

SUMMARY:Queer Writing Essentials
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nWriting authentic marginalized work can come with some unique problems\, especially if/when we engage with the mainstream publishing industry or its readers. This 3-hour class was designed to help queer writers navigate some of the less-discussed aspects of marginalized writing\, including how to introduce your characters as queer\, creating effective social justice themes within your storytelling\, handling “relatability\,” and how to invite in outside readers without compromising your story’s authenticity. Peppered with writing exercises\, this class will engage with works from such authors as Gabby Rivera\, Andrea Lawlor\, Rajiv Mohabir\, Kacen Callender\, Akwaeke Emezi\, Carmen Maria Machado\, Jordy Rosenberg\, and more. \n*While this class is designed with queer writers in mind\, cisgender/heterosexual writers are welcome to attend and learn.
