SUMMARY:Writing Outside of Your Lane Series: The Basics
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nOver the past several years\, the publishing world (and its readers) have thankfully demanded more diversity within stories. But as welcoming as this change is\, it can leave many non-marginalized writers with anxiety. How are you supposed to go about it? What if you mess up? Are you allowed to write about marginalized people at all? This 3-hour course provides mainstream writers with the basics of how to write a marginalized character with which they don’t have a lived experience\, breaking the process down into the bare bones of Self-Reflection\, Research\, Craft\, Editing\, and How to Handle Backlash. With pragmatic and clear-cut information—as well as the wisdom from such writers as Alexander Chee\, Peter Ho Davies\, and Stella Young—writers will leave this course with significantly more insight\, awareness\, and confidence to produce the most accurate and empathetic work they can. \n$65.00 GrubStreet Members | $75.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/writing-outside-of-your-lane-1/

SUMMARY:Writing Transgender and Nonbinary Characters
DESCRIPTION:90-minute session via Zoom \nWith demand for transgender and nonbinary narratives on the rise\, more cisgender (non- trans/nonbinary) people are adding trans and nonbinary characters to their stories. In this session\, we will explore the “Three E’s” of wanting to write a trans/nonbinary character (empathy\, education\, and empowerment)\, the best craft approaches for each\, and their potential pitfalls. We’ll also go over inappropriate reasons to write a trans/nonbinary narrative\, general do’s and don’ts\, and an overview of the experiences most often used incorrectly in stories. *Class starts 11am PST/2pm EST. \n$75.00 \nLimited Free Registration: We reserve a percentage of free seats in every class for writers who identify as Black\, Indigenous\, and/or Persons of Color (BIPOC) on a first-come-first-served basis\, regardless of financial need. \nHelping Hand Discount (Enter Code at Checkout): If you are under more limited economic circumstances and/or identify as from a marginalized background\, we offer a 26% discount. SUMMARY:Novel in Progress
DESCRIPTION:8 Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting April 7th\, 2022 via Zoom \nFirst drafts of novels can be messy\, amorphous\, and daunting. Sometimes\, extensive critical feedback can be counterproductive before the first draft is finished\, yet writers often find themselves losing focus without support and guidance. In class\, we will do exercises\, discuss craft issues—characterization\, the protagonist’s desire\, plot and outlining\, point of view\, endings—and read short scenes from our work\, providing feedback in an environment that recognizes the specific challenges of the novel in progress. Novels of all genres are welcome. \nPlease Note: Class does not meet on April 28th. \n$475.00 GrubStreet Members | $495.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/novel-in-progress-36/

SUMMARY:Novel Writing Workshop for Queer\, Trans\, and/or Nonbinary Writers
DESCRIPTION:10 Mondays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting January 24th\, 2022 via Zoom \nThis class is for queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary novelists who have taken advanced workshops before\, are well versed in matters of craft\, and who have already made some progress on a first draft. Many queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary writers may have experienced workshops in the past that were silencing\, unhelpful\, or damaging when being workshopped by a predominantly cisgender/heterosexual writing group\, however well-intentioned the group may have been. This particular workshop course is designed to help create a more intimate and relatable space for queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary writers to both give and receive feedback on their works in progress. While the course will be predominantly workshop-focused\, we’ll also go over some craft elements\, as well as challenges more common to marginalized writers\, such as believability\, relatability\, and character (im)purity. \nThe goals of this workshop are to workshop at least 15 pages in ten weeks—minimum\, depending on class size—as well as to identify and correct any shortcomings in craft areas such as characterization\, point of view\, structure\, plot\, and scenes. Each class will begin with a brief\, novel-specific writing exercise or lesson; the rest of the class will be devoted to workshopping. Feedback will be delivered using the novel-in-progress method: reading your pages (up to 15 pages\, double-spaced\, 12pt font) aloud in class at least once in the course—again minimum\, dependent on class size—and receiving on-the-spot\, non-silencing feedback from your fellow novelists and instructor. \n*This class is intended for writers who identify as queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary only. While novels that deal with queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary themes are certainly welcome\, they’re not required for this class. \n*Previous students of this course are welcome to return and continue workshopping their pages. \nPlease Note: Class does not meet on February 21st. \n$610.00 GrubStreet Members | $635.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/novel-writing-workshop-for-queer-trans-andor-nonbinary-writers/

SUMMARY:Novel Writing Workshop for Queer\, Trans\, and/or Nonbinary Writers
DESCRIPTION:8 Tuesdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting September 14th\, 2021 via Zoom \nThis class is for queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary novelists who have taken advanced workshops before\, are well versed in matters of craft\, and who have already made some progress on a first draft. \nThe goals of this workshop are to write at least 100 pages and workshop at least 15 pages in eight weeks—minimum\, depending on class size—as well as to identify and correct any shortcomings in craft areas such as characterization\, point of view\, structure\, plot\, and scenes. \nNote: This class is intended for writers who identify as queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary only. While novels that deal with queer\, trans\, and/or nonbinary themes are certainly welcome\, they’re not required for this class. \n$490.00 GrubStreet Members | $510.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/novel-writing-workshop-for-queer-trans-andor-nonbinary-writers-remote/

SUMMARY:Writing Outside of Your Lane Series: Novel Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:6 Wednesdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting July 21st\, 2021 via Zoom \nThis workshop-focused course is for novelists who want to put more diversity in their stories in the most mindful and empathetic way they can. Over the course\, each student will get at least two 50-minute\, non-silencing\, novel-in-progress-style workshops\, in which they can read aloud up to 16 double-spaced pages. Fellow students will then work together to assist the workshopee in reflecting on their given marginalized character’s representation\, brainstorm any potential roadblocks\, or help think through specific questions or concerns the workshopee may have. Each class will also start with a writing lesson and/or exercise related to mindfulness in craft\, as well as group discussion of the book we’ll be reading together as homework: PET by Akwaeke Emezi. \nThis course is for novelists who have workshop experience\, are acquainted with matters of craft\, and who have already made some progress on a first draft. \nDisclaimer: Please note that these workshops will NOT be sensitivity reads\, even if a character’s identity resonates with the instructor’s (or particular students’) own identities. (Individuals who have a given identity are welcome to provide their thoughts during workshops\, but this will be neither expected nor guaranteed.) Instead\, these workshops are meant to guide students through their own preconceived notions and potential red flags in order to encourage their own innate mindfulness when writing outside of their lane. Workshopping is not meant to prescriptively fix a novel\, but rather teach a life skill. \n$365.00 GrubStreet Members | $380.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/writing-outside-of-your-lane-novel-writing-workshop-remote/

SUMMARY:Genre-Queer
DESCRIPTION:4 Thursdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting May 6th\, 2021 via Zoom \nThroughout our history of marginalization and oppression\, queer voices have created our own ways of speaking and expressing ourselves. But with us so Othered in queer tongues\, how do we tell our stories to the mainstream authentically? In this queer-focused course\, we’ll look at several literary tactics for expressing ourselves—such as Fracturing\, Modulating\, Fabulism\, and Spiraling—as well as finding our voices as queer people and tackling such conundrums as slang and cultural references. We’ll look at the examples of such writers as Carmen Maria Machado\, Jordy Rosenberg\, Akwaeke Emezi\, and more to help us assert our stories in ways that demand us to be heard without compromising our queerness. *Cisgender/heterosexual people are welcome to attend this course if they’re eager to learn about storytelling methods beyond the traditional narrative arc. \n$215.00 GrubStreet Members | $225.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/genre-queer-remote/
