SUMMARY:Writing Transgender Characters
DESCRIPTION:1-hour seminar via Zoom \nWith demand for transgender and nonbinary narratives on the rise\, more cisgender (non- trans/nonbinary) people are adding trans and nonbinary characters to their stories. But what can you do to make sure you’re providing accurate representation? In this session\, we will explore the “Three E’s” of wanting to write a trans/nonbinary character (empathy\, education\, and empowerment)\, the best craft approaches for each\, and their potential pitfalls. We’ll also go over inappropriate reasons to write a trans/nonbinary narrative\, general do’s and don’ts\, and an overview of the experiences most often used incorrectly in stories. \nThis event is only available to Muse & the Marketplace attendees. You can register HERE.

SUMMARY:Writing Outside of Your Lane
DESCRIPTION:3-hour class via Zoom \nOver the past several years\, the publishing world (and its readers) have thankfully demanded more diversity within stories. But as welcoming as this change is\, it can leave many non-marginalized writers with anxiety. How are you supposed to go about it? What if you mess up? Are you allowed to write about marginalized people at all? This 3-hour course provides mainstream writers with the basics of how to write a marginalized character with which they don’t have a lived experience\, breaking the process down into the bare bones of Self-Reflection\, Research\, Craft\, Editing\, and How to Handle Backlash. With pragmatic and clear-cut information—as well as the wisdom from such writers as Alexander Chee\, Peter Ho Davies\, and Stella Young—writers will leave this course with significantly more insight\, awareness\, and confidence to produce the most accurate and empathetic work they can. \n$65.00 GrubStreet Members | $75.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/writing-outside-of-your-lane-remote-1/

SUMMARY:Advanced Novel Workshop
DESCRIPTION:10 Tuesdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm\, starting January 19th\, 2021 via Zoom \nThis class is for novelists who have taken advanced workshops before\, are well versed in matters of craft\, and who have already made some progress on a first draft. The goals of this workshop are to write or revise at least 100 pages in ten weeks\, as well as to identify and correct any shortcomings in craft areas such as characterization\, point of view\, structure\, plot\, and scenes. Each class will begin with a brief\, novel-specific writing exercise or lesson; the rest of the class will be devoted to workshopping. Feedback will be delivered using the novel-in-progress method: reading your pages (10-11\, double-spaced) aloud in class each week and receiving on-the-spot feedback from your fellow novelists and instructor. Each student will have a 20-minute conference with the instructor midway through the course. At the end of class\, you will have a choice of submitting 20 pages of new or revised scenes for evaluation or having a 1-hour meeting with the instructor\, where you will present a revised scene and discuss overall strategies for finishing or revising the novel. Class size is limited to 9 students. See below for directions to apply. \n$645.00 GrubStreet Members | $670.00 Non-members\nScholarships are available for all GrubStreet classes.\nRegister here: https://grubstreet.org/findaclass/class/advanced-novel-workshop-remote-1/ \n*Application deadline for this course is Monday\, January 4th\, 2021.

SUMMARY:Jumpstart Your Novel
DESCRIPTION:6 Thursdays from 10:30am-1:30pm\, starting January 14th\, 2021 via Zoom \nYou’ve started out on a first novel draft—maybe you just have an idea\, maybe you’ve written a few chapters\, maybe you’ve written a lot\, but have no idea how it all holds together—but you’re not sure where to go next.
