Content Warnings 101

September 24 @ 10:30 am - 1:30 pm

3-hour class via Zoom

While what we write (and how we write it) is important, and how we present it to the public can carry just as much weight. With so many works of varying complexities and potentially traumatic situations, we all want to be as responsible and respectful as we can to the experiences of our own readers. But it turns out being responsible may not be as straightforward as we thought!

In this class, we’ll explore content warnings (also known as trigger warnings): what they are, who they’re for, and why they exist. We’ll look at the findings from some studies of content warnings, consider some pros and cons, and respectfully discuss as a group if content warnings are helpful, harmful, or somewhere in-between. We’ll also go over students’ concerns or anxieties of content warning use (or lack thereof) and which path may fit best for them. Students will also spend time drafting their own content warnings using their findings from the session.

By the end of class, students will leave with a deeper understanding of content warnings and more confidence for which path they’d prefer to take.
