Writing Outside of Your Lane Series: Language, Slurs, and Word Choice
June 12 @ 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
3-hour class via Zoom
When writing outside of your lane, you may find yourself asking many questions: Can I write in a marginalized character’s syntax or style of speaking? Can I use a slur if it’s relevant to the plot? Is a problematic depiction of a character allowed if it’s historically accurate? What name and pronouns should I use for a transgender character in their “before” time?
In this 3-hour class, we’ll use discussion, Q&A, examples, and writing/critical thinking exercises to understand the best ways to accurately represent marginalized characters (and/or their struggles) without causing further harm to given communities in the real world. We’ll look at examples and discussions of representation from such writers as Danez Smith, Alexander Chee, Rebecca Makkai, and more.
