Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusion in the Writing Workshop
November 7, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
90-minute class via Zoom
Please note: This session is open to GrubStreet instructors only.
With transgender and nonbinary visibility on the rise, transgender and nonbinary stories are appearing in fiction at a significant rate, necessitating workshops to grow awareness of how to best critique such stories and ensure transgender and nonbinary students feel included in the classroom at large. By providing a helpful environment for transgender and nonbinary writers and their stories, instructors can play an important role in bolstering transgender and nonbinary visibility in the written arts.
In this 90-minute session, we’ll look at how to prep your syllabus and classroom for transgender and nonbinary inclusion; investigate classroom situations most commonly experienced by transgender and nonbinary students within a cis*-majority space; and have opportunity to ask curiosity questions you may have about the transgender and nonbinary communities. Don’t be shy! This session is designed to encourage cisgender* instructors to do their best and help them better connect with themselves and the gender-diverse worlds around them.
* “Cisgender” (or “cis” for short) is defined as a person who identifies with the gender and/or sex they were assigned at birth.
